The South Atlantic Philosophy of Education Society (SAPES) was founded more than a half century ago in order to promote the philosophic study of education, advance and improve teaching and scholarship in philosophy of education and cultivate relationships between educators and philosophers alike. Since 1955, it has expanded to include scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds who meet annually to discuss issues related to the philosophy of education and other foundational concerns. Included are philosophers, historians, sociologists, anthropologists, and others whose work illuminates the relationships between schools and wider societies.
The South Atlantic Philosophy of Education Society (SAPES) is a regional organization (Region III) of the national Philosophy of Education Society.
The mission of SAPES is:
- to promote the fundamental philosophical study of education;
- to promote the philosophical treatment of the problems and issues of education through the opportunities afforded by annual meetings;
- to advance and improve teaching and scholarship in the philosophy of education in schools for the education of teachers and other educators;
- to cultivate fruitful working relationships in philosophy of education among educators, educational philosophers, and philosophers in general; and
- to encourage promising students in the field of philosophy of education.
